The Afflicted Review

A story of incomprehensible abuse delivered by an explosively violent mother of four. Journey through the mind of a child that experiences a living hell, defined and defended by the twisted religious beliefs of her mother.

The Afflicted (2010) is an American thriller horror movie that is loosely based on the real-life case of American woman Theresa Knorr, who was convicted of torturing/murdering two of her six children. The movie ends differently from the real case. First- time director, producer, and editor Jason Stoddard excelled in every possible way executing this film about a dysfunctional family. The movie includes murder, suicide, beating with a belt, child abuse, emotions, struggles, suggestive sexual acts, nudity, violence, true story, and what a parent can do to a child.

The Afflicted revolves around Maggie ( Leslie Easterbrook - The Devil’s Rejects (2005), Police Academy (1984), Halloween (2007), Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986)) who is the mother of four children. Everyone appears to be happy at her daughter Carla’s (Sims Holland) birthday except for her husband, Hank. Hank ( Kane Hodder - Se7en (1995), Monster (2003), Frozen (2010), Jason X (2001)) expressions hint that something is majorly wrong with his wife. Maggie’s religious beliefs became contorted to the point where she lashes out at her daughters in the most horrible way possible. Hank packed a bag with a few of his belongings and attempted to leave but did not get to as Maggie confronts him and we see the real side of his dearest wife, Maggie. He did what I guess you already figured out; she murders him because she refuses to let him leave for a few day to figure things out. She hid his body in the freezer in the shed and made the kids think that their father abandoned them.

It was so depressing to see what Maggie put her children through as their mother - not even a stranger should do such horrible things to kids and torment the girls the way she did. I was devastated when I saw them being beaten, deprived, raped as their brother Bill (Cody Allen - The Brightest Sound (2005), Bikini Spring Break (2012), Lovely, Still (2008)) is liked by Maggie. Bill does everything Maggie asked of him. Their only source of help is preacher Cowboy Profit (J.D. Hart - Social Path (2012), Side Sho (2007), A Little Christmas (2009)), who does not notice what ordeals the girls are going through.

First-time director Jason Stoddard did an excellent job capturing the very real horror in a heart-wrenching way. The music put together with the movie and tone will make you sad. The Afflicted is not an entertaining film that will humor a person, but it is instead a sorrowful and dark film that you will feel in your gut and will give you all sort of emotions. Leslie Easterbrook did an excellent job with her role and was the best actor in this film. It is a movie that I am happy seeing but will not like to see again because it is too heartbreaking to see the tortures those kids had to endure.
