Hardcore Henry Plot Synopsis:

Hardcore Henry is an action film told from a first person perspective: You remember nothing. Mainly because you've just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who's got her? His name's Akan; he's a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You're also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy. He may be on your side, but you aren't sure. If you can survive the insanity, and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the truth behind your identity. Good luck, Henry. You're likely going to need it...

Hardcore Henry (2015) Review

Hardcore Henry (2015) is a Russian-American science fiction action movie filled with innovative adventure and thrills. First-time full-length director, actor (Timothy), producer and screenwriter Ilya Naishuller (All at Once (2014), Deet N Bax Save Th World (2015)) excelled in executing this action filled POV film. Hardcore Henry is shot in POV style where we get to see everything Henry does or see through his eyes as though we were there. I applaud Ilya Naishuller for putting the viewers in the middle of the action by using various GoPro devices to shoot the film. It made me feel as though I was watching a live stream with everything unfolding in front of my eyes. He did a fantastic job capturing a few impressive jaw dropping scenes. Hardcore Henry is not for everyone and viewers will either love the film or dislike it. The movie was a fantastic jaw-dropping treat for me and pretty entertaining.

Hardcore Henry does not have much of a plot, and it is as thin as it can get revolving around Henry who was resurrected. Henry wakes up in a laboratory only to be told by his wife Estelle (Haley Bennett - The Equalizer (2014), Marley & Me (2008), The Hole (2009)) that he is part robotic because that was the only way to save him from a near death encounter. Henry was turned into a cybernetic soldier, and the worse part is that Henry does not remember anything about his life including his wife. After being told what happened to him (not even five minutes later), Henry is left with a task to fight against time as he tries to save his wife and also tries to find out the truth about his prior life.

Akan (Danila Kozlovsky - Vampire Academy (2014), Legenda No. 17 (2013), My is budushchego (2008)) is a warlord that kidnapped Henry’s wife Estelle because he wants bio-engineer soldiers. Akan has the power of telekinesis and desires to dominate the world, but his army of mercenaries is not enough to help him, he needs robotics as well. It is not easy for Henry to save his wife because everyone in Moscow is out to take his life except for Jimmy (Sharlto Copley - District 9 (2009), Maleficent (2014), Chappie (2015), Elysium (2013)) who had once worked for Akan. Jimmy was a scientist and decides to help Henry because he wants to stop Akan from his madness. Jimmy helped Henry by becoming his guide in unfamiliar Moscow and gave him tips on what to do, etc. but he is not your average guide - no spoilers.

I love this film, and it is unusual for me to like/love POV style movies because it usually makes my head hurt with the shaky camera action and sudden movements, but this film was far different. I watch my husband, and kids play video games quite often, and I cannot help but feel like this movie resembles the setup of video games, maybe I am wrong, but that is how it feels to me. The introduction at the beginning of the movie and ending of the film where Akan and Henry battles on the rooftop with helicopter and bodies everywhere so reminds me of video games. Sharlto Copley did an amazing job portraying Jimmy, who was a fun character that added the humor when needed to lighten things up a bit. As I have mentioned above, this movie is not for everyone, and you can pretty much tell if this movie is for you from watching the trailer.
