Girl in Woods Review
Synopsis:After a tragic accident Grace is lost and alone in the Smoky Mountains. Grace's struggle for survival is made more complicated by her troubled past. Battling the demons in her mind may be the only way to come out alive.
Girl in Woods (2016) is an 87-minute American drama thriller horror movie that was shot in Grenada, Mississippi, USA and several locations in Cordova, Tennessee, USA. Director and writer Jeremy Benson (Live Animals (2008), Shutter (2005), The Smallest Oceans (2005)) did an excellent job making this survivalist psycho-thriller movie get gradually darker as time progresses. The film was weird at times and even silly, and that can be blamed on the dialogue which sounds unnatural, but Girl in Woods did manage to keep me guessing and finding various scenarios about what is happening.
Girl in Woods revolves around Grace (Juliet Reeves London - Automaton Transfusion (2006), Second Coming (2009), Illumination (2011), Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! (2008)) going for a retreat in the woods with her fiance Jim. Jim (Jeremy London - Mallrats (1995), Party of Five (1994), I’ll Fly Away (1991), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1999)) is planning on asking Grace the famous question but things do not go the way he planned. Grace has mental problems (we were not told what kind of problems) and finds herself alone deep in the woods with only one bottle of water, rifle, and cannot get a signal on her phone.
Grace did not take long to battle her inner demons as she spirals into madness and hallucinates/remembers several bloody horrifying moments in her life. I usually do not like flashbacks but did not mind it in this film because it helped us to learn about Grace childhood which was good but confusing at times. The film gets more complicated as it progresses and adds a mystery that I was eager to solve leaving me to invent different scenarios which are kind of a good thing because it is not alway good to be fed all of the information. The film was confusing because there were dream sequences within dreams sequences mostly about her witnessing her father’s suicide when she was a child. Grace started to hunt a black humanoid rat (looks like a ghoul), and this is where I leave you to determine if it is a movie that you desire to watch.
Girl in Woods will leave you with a lot of questions after viewing it, and you most likely will find yourself thinking about the film long after it is finished. Juliet Reeves London is beautiful and had a strong performance throughout but did not do justice to her character, Grace, because her dialogue was not convincing. The cinematography was fantastic as well as the sets and sound. I felt a few scenes were too repetitive, but the film was a beautifully shot film, enjoyable, and took us on a mysterious ride that kept me guessing. The ending was unexpected as it was depressing, twisted, and bloody.
