The Haunting of Molly Hartley Review
Synopsis:Molly Hartley looks to put her troubled past behind her with a fresh start at a new school, where she sparks with one of the most popular students...
Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008) is a 1h 22min American supernatural thriller horror movie that I had anticipated upon seeing the trailer and was in total shock when I saw the film. I thought/assumed that the movie was going to be a ghost type movie, but I was so wrong. Director Mickey Liddell (The Grey (2011), The Collector Go (1999), Everwood (2002-2006)) failed miserably at executing this film. The only thing that was good about this film was the actors giving us a decent performance with an unpleasant screenplay.
Teenager Molly ( Haley Bennett - The Equalizer (2014), Hardcore Henry (2015), Marley & Me (2008), Music and Lyrics (2007)) is a beautiful girl that is being haunted by demons of her past. She is approaching her eighteenth birthday, has relocated to a new town with her father and has started a new school. Molly is not your average teenager and is having a very hard time with her new school and dealing with issues revolving around her mother who attempted to kill Molly. Molly’s mom was sent to a mental facility leaving Molly’s father to raise her alone. Her dad is keeping secrets from her while she is not doing so great herself as she is having panic attacks, hallucinations, visions, and migraines.
Molly’s stab wounds show us that she has been harmed in the past, and her claims of repeatedly seeing her mother who is locked up in a facility make us question her sanity. There was a lot of turns in the story, but the ending could not have been more predictable than it was. We are lead to believe as the movie progresses that something dangerous will happen when Molly turns 18-years-old. Horror fans should expect this film to be a total disaster as there is no frights, thrills, horror, haunts, ghosts or anything resembling a scary movie that will put the least bit of spook in you. With that said, I gave the film a one because all of the actors did an okay job with their performances but I cannot expect much from the actors if the screenplay was not up to standards to make an average movie.
