Men in Black (1997) Review

In the 90s and the early 2000s, Will Smith was the go-to man for summer blockbusters. It seemed like no matter what movie he starred in; it would be a complete success. Men in Black (1997) was no different. This film proved to be an interesting spin on the science fiction movie genre with its use of unique comedy gadgets and comedic humor.

Men in Black is about New York police officer James Edwards (Smith) who stumbles upon the knowledge that aliens exist when he is pursuing a suspect with incredible abilities. James meets Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) a Men in Black agent who specializes in protecting the world from aliens. Agent K gives James a business card and James goes to the address on the card the following day and enters a facility where he and other individuals are given a variety of tests.

James is offered a position to join the Men in Black by Agent K with the stipulation that his identity would be erased. James accepts it and becomes Agent J. His abilities and resourcefulness is put to the test when the Men in Black have to stop an alien who wants to acquire a missing galaxy.

Men in Black is a comedic movie that has a lot of hilarious scenes especially with Agent J who does not know what he has gotten himself into. Will Smith’s trademark cool persona is turned upside down as he hysterically screams throughout the movie when he is way over his head. Agent J is constantly thrown around and can’t even control his own gun.

Tommy Lee Jones delivers an uncharacteristic funny performance as the straight man to Will Smith’s Agent J. Agent K remains in control and stoic even when he is swallowed by an alien he does not falter. He tries to teach Agent J the ropes on being a Men in Black agent and how important the job is.

Men in Black is and entertaining movie with its interesting special effects and light tone. Will Smith steals the show with his confused and gung-ho performance as Agent J. This movie will be remembered as a classic in the science fiction movie genre.
