The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)
The Girl with All the Gifts Plot Synopsis:In a dystopian near future, humanity has been ravaged by a mysterious fungal disease. The afflicted are robbed of all free will and turned into flesh-eating 'hungries'. Humankind's only hope is a small group of hybrid children who crave human flesh but retain the ability to think and feel. The children go to school at an army base in rural Britain, where they're subjected to cruel experiments by Dr. Caroline Caldwell (Glenn Close). School teacher Helen Justineau (Gemma Arterton) grows particularly close to an exceptional girl named Melanie (Sennia Nanua), thus forming a special bond. But when the base is invaded, the trio escape with the assistance of Sgt. Eddie Parks (Paddy Considine) and embark on a perilous journey of survival, during which Melanie must come to terms with who she is.
The Girl with All the Gifts (2016) Review
The Girl with All the Gifts (2016) is a 1h 51-min British post-apocalyptic thriller zombie horror movie that was that was adapted from the M.R. Carey novel of the same name. M.R. Carey (X-Men: Destiny (2011), Tristan et Iseut (2002), Shadow of the Elves (2004)) also wrote the screenplay. Director Colm McCarthy (Outcast (2010), Dream Team (1997), The Making of a Prodigy (2003)) did a fantastic job executing this phenomenal movie that gave me flashbacks of Day of the Dead (2015) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). The film was shot in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, UK; Birmingham, England, UK; Church Street, Birmingham City Centre, England, UK; Pripyat, Ukraine, and Chernobyl, Ukraine.
The Girl with All the Gifts revolves around a struggling scientist, two soldiers, a teacher and a young girl named Melanie trying to survive as they go on a journey. Melanie (Sennia Nanua - Beverley (2015)) is not our average little girl. She was infected with the zombie virus and is/was being studied along with other kids with the same symptoms at a government facility. It was unnerving for me to see that the children were kept in cages during the night and being taught things during the day. Helen Justineau (Gemma Arterton - Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), Quantum of Solace (2008), Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013), Clash of the Titans (2010)) tries to teach the children in an unconventional class. The children are being observed while she teaches them because Dr. Caroline Caldwell (Glenn Close - Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), 5 to 7 (2014), Low Down (2014)) hopes to find a cure that will stop zombies /hungries. Dr. Cladwell wants to save humanity from the hungries before the zombie virus consumes the entire human race.
Melanie and her group could not stay at the facility any longer because it was being overrun by hungries, so they set out on a mission to find a new home. The children were being taught how to be a human as they face dangers at every turn. It was gross to see what they did to conceal themselves from the flesh eating monsters. Melanie was the perfect person for the roles as she is so young, sweet and innocent but at the same time so dangerous as we see a story about survival. The special effects, makeup, cinematography, lighting effects, sound, and sets were brilliant.
