Patient Seven (2016) Review

Patient Seven (2016) is a 1h 56-min American horror anthology wraparound that intertwines seven short segments/films directed by filmmakers from around the world. Every horror fan should find something that they like from this anthology and will most likely enjoy the comedic twist. One of the things that all of the segments has in common is a shovel which can be suggesting that someone or something is being buried. I think that the directors had to include the shovel in their segment so that the segments can weave/unite/connect to each other with visual and symbolic meaning.

Two segments that I would not mind watching again in this lengthy anthology are Undying Love and The Body. Undying Love deals with love, a girlfriend being tied up in a basement and unlimited zombies running amuck everywhere. The Body was a sitting on the edge of my seat experience/watch as a serial killer commits a murder on Halloween night and we know what will happen to the victim who is very unaware of his/her fate. The Body was one of the most horrifying segments in this anthology. The Body and Undying Love reminds me of 28 Days Later (2002) with its similar shooting style and costumes.

Dr. Marcus (Michael Ironside - Total Recall (1990), The Machinist (2004), Top Gun (1986), Starship Troopers (1997)) is a famous psychiatrist. He is inquisitive and decides to accept a job at a mental institution so that he can study socio/psychopaths to see what causes their conditions and if the patients are hiding something sinister since most of them have committed murders. Dr. Marcus is one doctor that should not be messed with as he is not afraid of using unorthodox treatments that might sometimes include violence.

Patient Seven Segments

  1. The Visitant

    • Directed by Nicholas Peterson (The Ring (2002), Dark Mind (2006), Drained (2012))

    • The Visitant revolves around Jill (Ashleigh Buxton - The Visitant (2014)) who is suspected of murdering her mother. Jill claims that her mother (Amy Smart - The Butterfly Effect (2004), Crank (2006), Road Trip (2000), Crank: High Voltage (2009)) wanted to kill her.

  2. The Body

    • Directed by Paul Davis (The Body (2013), Beware the Moon: Remembering ‘An American Werewolf in London’ (2009), Him Indoors (2012), Doctor Who (2015))

    • The Body had me in a shocking state of mind while watching it because a serial killer pulled off the perfect burial of someone he murdered and received help from unsuspecting people. A serial killer walks through London on Halloween night with a plastic bag wrapped around a body and people thinks it is one of the best costumes they have seen and decides to help him bury the body which they think is fake but it is all too real.

  3. Undying Love

    • Directed by Omar Orn Hauksson (Odauoleg ast (2011))

    • Undying Love takes place in Iceland where it is infested with infected zombies everywhere. A young man cannot bear to depart from his zombie wife so he saves females from zombies so that he can feed them to his wife who is a zombie - now that is love!!!

  4. The Sleeping Plot

    • Directed by Dean Hewison (How to Meet Girls from a Distance (2012))

    • Sleeping Plot takes place in New Zealand where Sarah has a deadly secret that is all too dead - she is holding/keeping her dead friend Vic’s body in her wardrobe. Sarah does not have enough money to buy a shovel to dig the hole to bury her friend so her wardrobe will have to do until she has enough money.

  5. Banishing - Child Eater

    • Directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen (Child Eater (2012), Rift (2017))

    • Banishing revolves around sisters, demon, possession and a dog being buried in the backyard. The person who killed the dog claims that she was possessed and her sister thinks that it is all in her imagination, so she decides to perform an exorcism which went all too wrong.

  6. Death Scenes

    • Directed by Joel Morgan

    • Damon (William Mark McCullough - American Made (2017), Free State of Jones (2016), Mercy Street (2017), The Birth of a Nation (2016)) is believed by many to be a serial killer, but he believes that he is a vampire hunter. Is he using the title “vampire hunter” to commit murders and is he really a serial killer?

  7. Evaded

    • Directed by Johannes Persson and Rasmus Wassberg

    • Evaded is one segment that I am not sure of how to critique as I have mix feelings about it so please leave us a comment below and let us know what you think about Evaded.

Dr. Marcus felt proud of himself as he discovered that all of the patients were frauds that wanted to live in their own world so they can pay for their deeds but Dr. Marcus wants to punish them, will he? I do not like the horror anthology as a wraparound but found it to be a beautiful watch when watching each segment separately. The black humor along with the macabre and twists was much needed. Most of the actors in this anthology gave us impressive performances - so convincing that it makes me question if I can trust people with mental health conditions or psychiatrists.
