Doctor Strange (2016) Review

Doctor Strange (2016) is an 115-minute PG-13 American action-adventure superhero fantasy film that is the fourteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This movie had an estimated budget of $165 million and grossed over $339 million at the box office on its opening weekend. Doctor Strange is the biggest IMAX opening in November (2016) resulting in it overtaking the Christopher Nolan Interstellar (2014) record because it grossed $12.2 million domestically, $24 million internationally, and $24.2 million globally. Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson (Sinister (2012), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), Deliver Us from Evil (2014)) did an outstanding job executing this astounding action filled movie. The visuals, acting, and the musical score was the best features in this film.

Doctor Strange began shooting in Nepal on November 4, 2015, with the working movie title being Checkmate and then moved on to filming in the United Kingdom (Nov, 11) where it finished filming on April 3, 2016, in New York City.

Doctor Strange was shot in:

  • CBS Studio Center - 4024 Radford Avenue, Studio City, Los Angeles, California, USA.

  • Hong Kong, China

  • New York City, New York, USA (April 3, 2016)

  • Kathmandu, Nepal (Kathmandu Valley, Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Temple, Patan

  • Durbar Square in Patan, Thamel and New Road in Kathmandu)

  • Longcross Studios in Longcross, Surrey, England, UK (shooting began on November 11)

  • The crew built twenty-one sets at Longcross including sets from some scenes in Nepal.

  • Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, UK

  • Shepperton Studios, London, England, UK

  • Exeter College, Oxford, England, UK (January 2016)

Doctor Strange revolves around Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch - The Imitation Game (2014), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), Black Mass (2015)) who was a surgeon. He began learning the mystic arts from someone known as the Ancient One after he got in a horrific car accident that left him with trembling hands resulting in his career ending. Stephen was a brilliant neurosurgeon that resorted to doing whatever it takes to finding a result/answer/cure for his shaky hands. He eventually found a hidden world of magic that has alternate dimensions which were questionable at first to him, but he decides to leave his arrogant behavior aside and gives it a try. It was a laughing out loud moment for me when I saw him realizing that he does not know it as he had perceived before the accident. Stephen learned how to cast different spells including creating weapons, shields, portals for traveling around the world and uses a cloak that allows him to levitate. He can also manipulate time when he uses the Eye of Agamotto which is a relic that contains an Infinity Stone.

Doctor Strange was an excellent family movie that my family enjoyed but fans who would like the best experience should see the film in 3D or Imax if possible. I was saddened to see Stephen’s relationship with his former lover Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams - Midnight in Paris (2011), Sherlock Holmes (2009), Mean Girls (2004), Spotlight (2015)) because it can clearly be seen that they both care for each other deeply. Here is a thought - what about if it is true that our Earth is protected from other dimensions with a spell from three buildings/Sanctums that are located in New York City; London, and Hong Kong. Will Dr. Strange be able to save the world from the powerful Dormammu of the Dark Dimension?

Doctor Strange artfully balances every element of the movie which made it an entertaining superhero film that is engaging, eye-popping and has a sense of originality which keeps it away from our average cookie cutter movies. The 3D time manipulation sequences were simply mind-trippingly outstanding and could not have been any better - I would see the film again for the 3D scenes because it was visually spectacular. The storytelling was done so wisely, but I was a little bored at times with the ongoing dialogue in some scenes resulting in the movie receiving a score of an eight from me. All of the actors gave us exceptional performances, especially Benedict Cumberbatch who played Dr. Strange. Benedict went above and beyond to fulfill his role with various reactions that fit each scene - I applaud him for a great job well done, bravo.
