When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. Colossal (2016) Review

Colossal (2016) is a 1h 50 min Spain / Canadian science-fiction action-thriller-comedy film that was shot in Seoul, South Korea, and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Director and writer Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes (2007), Open Windows (2014), The ABCs of Death (2012), 7:35 in the Morning (2003)) did a fantastic job writing the script but fell short on executing his script. I thought Colossal was going to be something that was a hit out of the ballpark mainly because Anne Hathaway was the main lead in this film. Colossal was quirky, unpredictable, peculiar, sometimes entertaining, and not so memorable. The movie contains a kick-ass monster, effective comedic elements which were a joy to watch, suspense, thrills, action, and thrills.

Colossal revolves around thirtysomething-year-old Gloria (Anne Hathaway - Les Miserables (2012), Rachel Getting Married (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Interstellar (2014)) who is unemployed. Gloria has a drinking problem and to make things worse, her boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens - Downton Abbey (2010-2012), The Guest (2014), Beauty and the Beast (2017)) kicks her out of his NYC apartment. Gloria had no choice but to return to her hometown after her boyfriend threw her out and she has no money. It did not take long for her to meet her childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis - We’re the Millers (2013), Saturday Night Live (2003-2016), Horrible Bosses (2011), Horrible Bosses 2 (2014)) who owns a bar and hires Gloria. Gloria’s life kept going downhill and working in the bar did not help her situation/habit/alcoholism.

I was in total shock when I saw that Gloria assumes that she has something in connection with the deadly monster in Seoul, South Korea and it is the reason why she is going downhill. Anne Hathaway did an outstanding job playing Gloria, but Gloria was a frustrating person to understand and a mess of a protagonist, but I was still cheering her on to succeed. If I am not mistaken, this is probably Anne Hathaway’s strongest performance. With all said, the film is a hit or miss, and it was a miss for me. I gave this movie a four because of the entertainment it provides, the script and the fantastic creature it displays.
