Passengers (2016) Review

Passengers (2016) is a 1h 56 min PG-13 American science-fiction action adventure romance film that was shot in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and Fayetteville, Georgia, USA. Director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game (2014), Headhunters (2011), Buddy (2003)) did an excellent job executing Passengers. The movie had an estimated budget of $110 million and grossed over $294 million at the box office. Passengers contain sexual content, nudity, violence, suspense, thrills, intense scenes, blood, space, spaceship, hibernation, androids, cryonics, and blood.

Passengers are about a sleek spacecraft, Avalon which is transporting about 5,000 colonists that are in hibernation pods to a new planet, Homestead II. The journey to Homestead II will take about 120 years to get there, but the journey should be safe because the ship was designed to deal with meteor showers, asteroids, and other dangerous things. We all can predict that things did not go the way it was planned or suppose to. Engineer Jim Preston (Chris Pratt - Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Jurassic World (2015), Her (2013), Parks and Recreation (2009-2015)) hibernation pod malfunctions. Jim discovered that he is about 80 years away from their destinations and tries to go back into hibernation but the pod will not work and only has a robot bartender to keep him company.

Jim cannot take being alone and awakens Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence - The Hunger Games (2012), American Hustle (2013), Winter’s Bone (2010)) about a year later and let her believe that her pod malfunctioned. Aurora is/was a writer who has a witty personality. I must admit that Passengers started off creepy and the chemistry between Aurora and Jim were as realistic as can be but that does last for long as complications hit home soon. I enjoyed the movie overall and gave it a seven because it was enjoyable, entertaining and the comedy relieves much needed. There was several goofs/mishaps, plot holes, and minor continuity issues that might go unforeseen to some viewers.
