Ghost in the Shell (2017) Review

Ghost in the Shell (2017) is a 1h 47 min PG-13 American science fiction action-drama-thriller film that was based on the Japanese manga, Ghost in the Shell and was shot in several locations in China and New Zealand. Director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Black Hole (2010), How to Destroy Angels: The Space in Between (2010)) did a fantastic job executing his second full-length movie. The film contains cyborgs, hackers, dystopia, extreme violence, a live-action remake of anime, evolution, cyberpunk, suspense, and some disturbing images

Ghost in the Shell revolves around Major (Scarlett Johansson - Lost in Translation (2003), The Avengers (2012), Lucy (2014), The Prestige (2006)) in the near future where she is the first of her kind. Major was involved in a fatal car accident where she was saved and was cyber-enhanced to become a loyal soldier that fights the most dangerous criminals in the world. Major has a human brain along with an artificial body and is the field commander of Section 9 which is an anti-terrorist unit.

Major and her crew searches for cyber-terrorist, Kuze (Michael Pitt - Seven Psychopaths (2012), The Dreamers (2003), I Origins (2014)) who wishes to take down the robotics firm that created Major’s body. Major found out that her life was stolen from her and not saved and will do anything to find out anything about her past including stopping whoever stole her life so that he/she cannot do it to anyone else.

I have not seen the anime GHOST IN THE SHELL, although I have heard that it is one of the best anime out there. There was some pretty impressive visuals, dull action scenes, horrible pacing, no energy to make the audience a little pump, absurd dialogue that sound cartoonish.

Scarlett Johansson’s performance as a robot did not help the movie as her performance was weak and all of the other actors did not fall far behind. I gave this movie a five because it was an average movie with beautiful CGI and nice score. All of the actions scenes are alike as there is nothing new to tell them apart. The editing did not help the film as well because it was not seamless and the choreography could have been way better. I do not think the move was finished properly as the ending appeared not to be finished.
