The Circle (2017) Review

The Circle (2017) is a PG-13 1h 50 min American science fiction drama techno-thriller film that was based on Eggers’ 2013 novel, The Circle and was shot in several locations in California, USA. The movie had an estimated budget of $18 million and grossed over $27.3 million at the box office. This film contains minor sexual content, brief strong language, drug use, no thrills and a weak script. Director, producer and writer James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now (2013), Smashed (2012), The End of the Tour (2015)) is one of the best indie directors today that is recognized by many.

The Circle revolves around Mae Holland (Emma Watson - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)) who is an ordinary person who is unaccomplished and has a sick father. She managed to hold a customer service job at an internet corporation named The Circle and did not take long to move up in ranks at the company leading her to an assignment that leaves the futures of all humans in her hands. The assignment dealt with freedom, privacy, and surveillance.

There were not many thrills to be seen in The Circle, and there were some aspects of the movie that did not work well including Emma Watson who is an incredible actress but was not believable/convincing as a regular person in this film as her acting was off. Karen Gillan and Tom Hanks was spectacular in this film with their performances, but Hanks appeared to have trouble taking his respective role seriously. With all said, we were not treated to a thriller but instead a drama that was not fully explored as there was not much explanation in the film. The Circle was an okay watch that is nice for a rainy day.
