It Comes at Night (2017) Review

It Comes at Night (2017) is a rated R 1h 31 min American psychological mystery horror film that was shot in Woodstock, New York, USA. The movie had an estimated budget of $2 to $5 million and grossed over $11 million at the box office. Director and writer Trey Edward Shults (Krisha (2015), Krisha (2014), Mother and Son (2010)) did a fabulous job executing his second full-length movie by having us feel how good people are forced to become monstrous people. It is sad but true that people have no choice but to be afraid of people in the end because it is individuals who cause harm to others. This movie contains paranoia, disturbing images, bad language, infectious disease, violence, darkness, brutal murders, contagion, grim, human extinction, pandemic, post-apocalypse, apocalypse, bubonic plague, gore, and malevolence.

It Comes at Night revolves around a plague-like illness taking control of the human population which forces a family to join with another family so that they can survive although the two heads of the family do not exactly see eye to eye. The movie began with Paul (Joel Edgerton - Warrior (2011), Black Mass (2015), The Gift (2015), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)) and Bud (David Pendleton) having a disturbing interaction. The movie was intense throughout as there was always someone’s life on the line which leaves very little time for us the viewers to have stray thoughts.

All of the actors gave us A+ acting. It Comes at Night was an unsettling solid mystery thriller that kept me a bit nervy as the horror continues with blood pouring out of every orifice as bruises and lesions degrade the skin. It Comes at Night will make you guess what is about to happen and you might find yourself filling in the gaps. The director gave us a lot of action and surprise making the film into a very tense film with tension from the unknown.
