The Evil Within (2017) Review

The Evil Within (2017) is a 1h 38 min American psychological horror film that was originally titled The Storyteller (2017) and was shot in Guadalupe, California, USA; El Mirage Dry Lake, California, USA and in Los Angeles, California, USA. First-time director and writer Andrew Getty took about 15 years to complete this production which was largely financed (4-6 million) by himself. I felt sad when I learned that Andrew Getty passed away from gastrointestinal hemorrhage in (2015) which resulted in producer Michael Luceri completing the film.

The Evil Within revolves around a special-needs teenager named Dennis (Frederick Koehler - Kate & Allie (1984-1989), Death Race (2008), Mr. Mom (1983), Pearl Harbor (2001)) that talks to his reflection in a mirror.

Dennis is mentally challenged and lives with his brother John (Sean Patrick Flanery - The Boondock Saints (1999), The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009), Powder (1995)) who has to take care of Dennis. John’s other problem is that his girlfriend, Lydia (Dina Meyer - Starship Troopers (1997), Saw (2004), Johnny Mnemonic (1995), DragonHeart (1996)) wants to move to the next stage of their relationship and settle down.

John gives Dennis an antique mirror for his bedroom, but Dennis was not too happy with the mirror until the face in the mirror started talking to Dennis. Dennis started talking to his reflection in the mirror which is considered to be his alter ego and that alter ego tells Dennis to commit murders and put their bodies in the basement. The Evil Within shows us how Dennis gradually began to change as his conscious and subconscious becomes infested with thoughts.

I recommend this film to all horror fans as it was an excellent watch to see this mentally ill teenager go through the unexpected in his life. Frederick Koehler did a fantastic job playing Dennis and stole most of the scenes as he was extremely impressive in executing his role. The rest of the cast also gave us a solid performance. The visuals were outstanding giving us the eery feeling at the right moment. The Evil Within had a few flaws, but it was not too much to take away from a great movie experience.
