Batman: The Killing Joke (2016) Review
Batman: The Killing Joke (2016) is a rated R 1h 16 min American animated crime action superhero film that was based on Batman: The Killing Joke graphic novel and is the 26th film in the Animated DC Universe Original Movie series. The movie had an estimated budget of $3.5 million and grossed over $4.4 million at the box office. Director Sam Liu (Batman: Year One (2011), Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010), Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (2009)) did a decent job executing this animated movie that was either loved or disliked.
Batman: The Killing Joke was a Batman movie that fans had not seen before and displays dark roots. Legendary actors Kevin Conroy (Batman) and Mark Hamill (Joker) returned to do the voice overs. The movie contained sexual references, disturbing content, bloody images, extreme violence, brief partial nudity, superhero, gargoyle, Batcave, robbery, grenade, acid burn, taser, ax, home invasion, henchwoman, and an evil clown.
Batman: The Killing Joke revolves around Batman trying to find the Joker which ensures a lot of chaos and violence along the way.
Most fans including myself would rate Batman: The Killing Joke a seven but nonfans might drop the score down to a five because they reused the same animation style from the 90’s which is outdated for the present time but provides nostalgia. The Killing Joke should have had the best animation DC animated movies have ever had. The animation style and motion was not on par as The Dark Knight Returns (2012/2013) was, and the CG animation was extremely spotty at times resulting in the movie appearing cheaply made with the spotty animation. There was also a few glitches resulting in the film not being as neat as it should have been.
I like that there were more scenes with Barbara/Batgirl and thought that was a very good idea although her prolog was a bit rough. I love the music score and thought that it elevated the film. The best aspect of the movie is the voice actors who did a fantastic job, especially Kevin Conroy who voiced Bruce Wayne and Mark Hamill who voiced Joker.
