Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) Review

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) is a PG 1h 53 min American family fantasy adventure film that was shot in Gloucestershire, England, UK; Shepperton, Surrey, England, UK and Longcross, Surrey, England, UK. Alice Through the Looking Glass was the sequel to Alice in Wonderland (2010) and was based on characters that were created by Lewis Carroll. The movie had an estimated budget of $170 million and grossed over $299 million at the box office.

Director James Bobin (Muppets Most Wanted (2014), The Muppets (2011), Flight of the Conchords (2007-2009)) did not exceed expectations of Alice fans as the movie was an average watch with fantastic CGI. The film contains action scenes, dark fantasy, time travel, fire-breathing dragon, invisibility rivalry, backward time travel, surrealism, fantasy world, a female protagonist, and no suspense.

Alice Through the Looking Glass revolves around Alice discovering a magical looking glass that transports her to Wonderland. Alice did not like what she saw in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter is madder than usual. The Mad Hatter wishes to find out what happens to his family, so Alice decides to take it upon herself and use the Chronosphere to travel through time which let her see her friends along with enemies during different periods of their lives. Alice has a tough task on hand, and that is to save the Mad Hatter before time runs out and another huge problem that I will not spoil for those who have not watched the film.

There were many blemishes that I found including a muddled plot, lazy premise, lack of urgency, no tension until the final scene, underwhelming story, does not live up to its classic characters and it was loud. The movie was too expensive (budget) and could have optimized that budget better. A positive about the film was that the film was visually impressive and stunning.

I am not sure how this is a kids movie because kid movies are not supposed to be so confusing. It was terrible to see the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter - The King’s Speech (2010), Fight Club (1999), Alice in Wonderland (2010)) taking the vegetable soldier’s nose off of his face while he is alive and eating it. It was a disappointment that Anne Hathaway did not have more screen time.
