The Mangler Review
Synopsis:A laundry-folding machine has been possessed by a demon from Hell, causing it to develop homicidal tendencies.
The Mangler (1995) is an American, Australian and South African comedy science fiction thriller horror movie. It was filmed in London, England, UK, Los Angeles, California, USA, and South Africa. Director Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Poltergeist (1982), Salem’s Lot (1979)) failed at executing this movie. I expected better from him because he directed some classic horror hits. I am assuming the screenplay was well-done since it was written by Stephen King. The Mangler contains sexual references, strong violence, bloody, gore, bad language, dark and some frightening scenes for younger viewers.
The Mangler is about Bill Gartley’s (Robert Englund - A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989), Freddy vs. Jason (2003), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)) laundry facility, Gartley’s Blue Ribbon Laundry that he owns. Bill’s niece Sherry Ouelette (Vanessa Pike - To the Ends of the Earth (2005), Leonardo (2011), Never Say Die (1994)) accidently cut herself on the machines lever and sprayed blood on the Manglers thread. She is also at the same time trying not to get hurt from the icebox that some movers are carrying carelessly next to her. Her blood and the icebox came into contact with the Mangler and caused a lot of friction, sparks and streams of light. Sometime after an older person spilled anti-acid on the Manglers threads and tried to pick them up but failed. The machine malfunctions and pulled her whole body into the machine causing her to die.
Officer John Hunton (Ted Levine - Shutter Island (2010), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), American Gangster (2007)) and his brother Mark Jackson (Daniel Matmor - King of Sorrow (2007), Buffalo Heart (1996), Night Terrors (1993)) investigates the old lady’s death. They later think that the washing machine might be possessed and think the only way to stop the killing is by performing an exorcism on the machine. Sherry, Mark and John tried to exorcise the machine with holy water and a prayer before it kills more people. The machine appeared to shutdown, but Mark realizes that anti-acid is a key ingredient to the machines strength. He also realizes that the machine is stronger now since it was accidentally fed antacids. The machine comes to life - watch the movie if you want to know what happens next but I recommend not to.
The Mangler is one movie that I will never watch again because it was a total nightmare to watch. I had to force myself to stay awake to watch this boring movie. I gave it a four because of the killer machine. The acting was terrible, and the plot had way too many holes to keep the movie going. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of this movie.
