Gremlins 2 - The New Batch (1990) Review

Gremlins 2 - The New Batch (1990) is a grueling 1h 46-minute American fantasy comedy horror film that is the sequel to Gremlins (1984) and was shot in several locations in California, USA and New York, USA. Director Joe Dante (Gremlins (1984), Small Soldiers (1998), Innerspace (1987)) did not succeed in making this film into something that I would recommend to horror fans. The comedy was there but was too much and was not funny at times.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch revolves around Gizmo, who is in NYC now after his owner died and the building he was living in was demolished. Gizmo became terrified after a scientist discovered him and took him to Clamp Premiere Regency Trade Center & Retail Concourse building. Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan - Gremlins (1984), Waxwork (1988), Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992)) and Kate Beringer (Phoebe Cates - Gremlins (1984), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Drop Dead Fred (1991)) works there. Kate and Billy plan to steal Gizmo and take him home with them, but it was a little too late because he got wet which leads to the same results where he creates little green troublemakers that create havoc.

The gremlins were being experimented on in the genetics lab which resulted in the gremlins having several new abilities which they used to create wreak terror on the building’s occupants. One of the gremlins can speak and has a brilliant mind which plans to wait for sundown to release all of the gremlins onto the streets of Manhattan hoping they will get wet and multiply. The Gremlins have the potential of taking over New York if they are not taken care of fast.

I gave this film a four because of the actors who did a fabulous job with their roles, and the director tried to work with what he was given. There were too many gags and references to other movies in this film which made it lose its way from becoming something better than it is. I so wanted to take off the film, but my stubborn mind had to leave it on to see it through so I can write this review and warn others to stay away. There was a brainy gremlin, bat gremlin, spider gremlin, dentist gremlin and so many others. There were lots of cameo appearances in this film that I could care less for because it did not help the movie.
