Horror fans searching for a breakdown of A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) will find our review covers the plot, themes, and the shocking ending everyone talks about.
A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), aka Janghwa, Hongryeon (2003), was directed by Jee-woon Kim (I Saw the Devil (2010), The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008), A Bittersweet Life (2005)). Kim is a talented director, especially of Japanese horror flicks. This film is one hour and 55 minutes long and is rated R.
A Tale of Two Sisters tells the story of two girls who were sent away to a mental institute and who have returned home. They must now return to "normal" but how can they accomplish that with their obsessive and unbalanced stepmother always looming around. Did I forget to mention the ghost too?
As a J-horror movie, A Tale of Two Sisters sets a creepy and unsettling mood almost immediately. Soo-yeon Bae (Hongryeon) played by Geun-young Moon and Soo-mi Bae (Janghwa) played by Su-jeong Lim provide a weird sister duo that fits the part just right. This psychological horror mystery has similar filmmaking tricks like Ringu (1998) and Ju-On (2000) but stands apart at the same time. If you are a fan of The Grudge (2004) and The Ring (2002), give A Tale of Two Sisters a try and see how you like it. Even though I appreciated this film, it is just not something I enjoyed much and I will not be watching again.
