Aftershock is based on a true story of the 8.8 earthquake that happened in Chile in 2010. I love that this movie was shot in Chile and in many of the same locations that most of the tragedy happened. It gave us an insight of all that was ruined and all the devastation that took place there. An amazing fact to me was that the entire movie of Aftershock was shot using SLR cameras. I had expected Aftershock to earn more money on the opening weekend since it was based on a recent tragedy that affected so many people. By the way, this was a $2 million dollar budget film that only earned about $40,000 on the opening weekend. Director Nicolas Lopez (Que pena tu boda, Que pena tu vida) has a lot of knowledge with Spanish films and I believe that Aftershock is his first English film.
Aftershock contains horror, earthquake, nudity, s**ual content, violence, gore, people on fire, profanity, suspense, action, drama, explicit brutal r**e scenes, a true sense of mother nature and escaped convicts.
Aftershock did not make it far because the storyline did not flow well but it was very entertaining in my opinion. It showed three guys having the time of their life with three girls that they met. They were dancing in a nightclub in Valparaiso when the 8.8 earthquake hit and then found themselves fending for their lives against looters, escaped convicts and the threat of a tsunami that might hit Chile.The first 30 minutes of this film was okay but the rest of the film just blindly reeled me in. I did not want to be interrupted because of all the suspense, and you/I just want to know what will happen next. It is a very gruesome movie that is filled with gory, grotesque moments. You need a strong stomach to see this movie because some scenes were really sickening, dead babies, double r**ing, death by ax and tons of killing.
The only thing I learned from this movie is that mother nature can kick us in the butt anytime and whatever happens after is unpredictable. Anyone (well-known actor/actress, president, a bum off the street or an average middle-class person) can die during and after a natural disaster. In Aftershock, it was hard to distinguish who will die and who will not.
