Audition (1999), aka Odishon (1999), is directed by Takashi Miike (13 Assassins (2010), Audition (1999), Ichi the Killer (2001), Three… Extremes (2004)). This film is rated R for violence, torture, and s**uality. This Japanese horror movie has a runtime of one hour fifty-five minutes. Audition was referred to as a "true masterpiece if ever there was one" by Quentin Tarantino.
Audition has Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) who is a widower auditioning women. Why do you ask? He is a widower whose now grown son and a friend have set up these appointments with the ladies in hopes of finding him a new wife. Aoyama thinks he is auditioning these women for a movie, a fake movie unknowingly to him. Aoyama takes a liking to Asami Yamazaki (Eihi Shiina), but she is not who she seems. The tagline of Audition is "She always gets a part."
At first, Audition plays like a love story where the lead characters are trying to get to know each other. Eventually, we get to the gore fest that is Audition. There are some messy scenes to be had here. The acting from both of these main characters is great making you feel each turn in their character. The directing shines here and the soundtrack by Koji Endo mesh well together. Sit tight through the beginning because the real horror will kick in like night and day.
