Our take on Bad Moon (1996) explores its plot, scares, and horror highlights to help fans decide if it deserves a place on their watchlist.

Eric Red directed the werewolf film Bad Moon (1996) on an estimated $7 million movie budget. Bad Moon grossed $1 million at the US box office.

Bad Moon tells the story of Uncle Ted (Michael Pare) coming to live with his sister Janet (Mariel Hemingway) and her son Brett (Mason Gamble). He needs the support of family to help him cope with the werewolf curse that he is struggling to keep at bay. The little boy’s dog Thor even has a role to play in Uncle Ted’s redemption.

Bad Moon starts up after a vicious werewolf attack that kills Teds’ girlfriend and scars him forever. Ted, the new werewolf in town, decides to go to his sister’s house to chill out. Hell is raised, and Death is everywhere. Bad Moon pits a werewolf against a family. Will this brother be responsible for killing his sister and nephew?

Bad Moon is a barebones stripped down werewolf thriller film. The audience does not get too much time with Ted as a human to get attached to him. This hurts the film a bit because we care very little about his battle with the werewolf inside him. At first Uncle Ted hides his werewolf transformation by chaining himself to trees deep in the forest. The beast inside gets stronger as the full moon changes rack up, and it is now taking over Uncle Ted during his human moments. Secondly, Janet plays a very unconvincing loving mother, too one dimensional.

If you look past the minor flaws of the characters and actors, Bad Moon can be a decent werewolf watch.
