Where does Bats (1999) stand among horror films? Our review examines the scares, pacing, and what makes it unique in the genre.

Bats (1999) is an American science fiction horror movie with thrills that is 91 minutes and was filmed in several locations in Utah, USA. Bats is known as a cult film that had an estimated budget of $5.25 million and grossed over $10.16 million worldwide. Director Louis Morneau (Retroactive (1997), Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (2012), Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead (2008)) failed at developing the characters and making the movie scary. There was no creep factor to the film except for bats flying around eating the humans and the special effects was not good and should have been left alone if it could not be executed to an average standard. The movie is watchable but should not be considered a horror movie in any way because it is more humorous than scary. The actors did a great job with their performance, but that was not enough to help the movie to become something it was meant to be. I gave this movie a five because it was not bad or good and contains a few good comedy.

Bats are terrorizing people in Gallup, Texas by killing them and torturing them. Zoologist, Dr. Sheila Casper (Dina Meyer - Starship Troopers (1997), Saw (2004), Johnny Mnemonic (1995), DragonHeart (1996)) was called in by the CDC to help. Sheila and her assistant, Jimmy Sands (Leon Robinson - Cool Runnings (1993), Cliffhanger (1993), Above the Rim (1994), Buffalo Soldiers (2001)) specializes in studying bats. Sheila is furious that Dr. Alexander McCabe (Bob Gunton - The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Argo (2012), Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), Demolition Man (1993)) genetically modified the bats to be omnivorous and more intelligent. Alexander modified the bats so that they would not be extinct and did not anticipate them killing people. Sheila, Jimmy and Sheriff Emmett Kimsey (Lou Diamond Phillips - La Bamba (1987), Courage Under Fire (1996), Young Guns (1988), Longmire (2012)) searches for the bats nest. The team was successful on their first night of hunting for the bats because they managed to put a tracking device in one. The bats are so intelligent that they killed the bat with the tracking device as soon as it was free. The townspeople did not listen to the warning to stay indoors which resulted in many people dying. Sheila and her team have 48 hours to exterminate thousands of bats, or the National Guards will destroy the town if they do not succeed in killing the bats.
