Exploring Battleship (2012) through our review, we cover its story, scares, and how it fits into the broader horror genre landscape.
Battleship (2012) is an American military science fiction action adventure movie that was not bad, but not overly good at the same time. Director Peter Berg (Lone Survivor (2013), Collateral (2004), Friday Night Lights (2006)) did an excellent job executing this movie, but it could have been better. The movie could have been a hit and received a score of nine if the graphics were on par and the director tried a little harder. The film contains violence, aliens, warships, bad language. Intense action scenes and great sceneries.
Lieutenant Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch - John Carter (2012), Lone Survivor (2013), Savages (2012)) was a disrespectful and hotheaded tactical action officer. Alex is dating Sam Shane (Brooklyn Decker - Just Go with It (2011), What to Expect When You’re Expecting (2012), Stretch (2014)) who is the daughter of U.S. Pacific Fleet Admiral Terrance Shane. Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson - Schindler’s List (1993), Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), Batman Begins (2005), Taken (2008)) is not pleased with his daughter dating Alex. Alex’s older brother Commander Stone Hopper (Alexander Skarsgard - HBO’s True Blood) is a naval officer that does not like his brother’s behaviour.
Their ship was in the ocean as five alien spacecraft arrive. Four ships landed in Hawaii as their communications ship crashes in Hong Kong. The crash caused significant damages and chaos. Alex, Cora Raikes (Rihanna - The Hangover (2009), 21 (2008), I Love You, Man (2009)) and Beast (John Tui - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), Power Rangers S.P.D. (2005), Power Rangers Mystic Force (2006)) went in a small raft to investigate the situation. After a few events, the Navy fires a warning shot at the alien ship. The aliens retaliated and destroy the Sampson and Myoko, which resulted in killing some of the Navy commanding and executive officers. It was heartbreaking when I saw Alex seeing his brother die. Alex is now in command because he is the most senior officer that remains on the ship. The aliens then took matters into their hands by damaging the road that leads to the military base and killing a lot of humans.
The movie takes a turn when Sam and the U.S. Army veteran who is a double amputee takes a mountain hike. Sam soon learns of the aliens taking over the communications array and their plans to communicate with their home planet. A humanoid alien is finally captured at sea and questioned after attacking Alex. Watch the movie to see how Sam and Alex battle the aliens. It was a great non-stop action film that I would show to my guests and friends. It is not a horror movie, but more of a science fiction thriller that does not disappoint.
