Berserk (1997) is a Japanese anime action-adventure television series that aired from 1997 to 1998 and is also known as Sword-Wind Chronicle. Berserk is comprised of 25 half-hour episodes and is an adaptation of the manga Berserk. I consider Berserk to be a masterpiece entirely that has flaws when it comes to a few scenes with lazy animation. I enjoyed this entertaining anime that had a solid plot, weak/mediocre visuals, impressive character development and good animation quality.
Berserk is one of the best anime you can watch and enjoy it regardless if you are a fan or not of the genre. Berserk is set in fictional medieval Europe containing magical elements but is still grounded. The movie focuses on Guts who was raised by a mercenary group since birth, but he ran away after killing his guardians in self-defense. He became a traveling swordsman mercenary that is not afraid of death or dy**g and will happily accept any task thrown at him only if it includes him fighting. I was sad to see Guts dark, troubled childhood with mysterious demons haunting him. The story might sound familiar, but I assure you it is not like any other as Guts story goes in depth and takes you to another level but it is something you have to see to experience. We see Guts as a wandering mercenary to becoming a high ranking military leader which is great. One of the things I did not like about Guts is that he grew stronger and more deadly with each kill he used his massive sword. It was nice seeing him getting close to someone and developing personal relationships with Griffith and Caska.
There were a few brutal and dark scenes throughout some of the episodes that were hard for me to digest/watch because of the graphic images. There is a lot of bloodshed with people dy**g brutally, the decapitation of horses amongst other things leading to huge blood sheds, gore. The majority of this anime covers the ‘Golden Age’ arc. The storyline remains intact although there were many changes made with modifying or eliminating characters and modifying the most violent and brutal scenes along with materials that would prolong the storyline more than planned. The crew focused on character development, ambition and themes of friendship.
