Our honest review of Bite (2015) breaks down its scares, pacing, and whether this horror movie truly stands the test of time.
Bite (2015) is a Canadian horror movie that should not be seen by individuals with a weak stomach because this movie was grotesque with gut-wrenching scenes. Director and screenplay writer Chad Archibald (The Drownsman (2014), Ejecta (2014), Neverlost (2010)) did a fantastic job executing this disturbing fun filled movie. It did not take long for me to feel sick to my stomach and it did not take long - few minutes from the opening scene, and it was mainly due to the found footage style. For those of you who has read my reviews, I am not a huge fan of found footage, and there is just a handful of found footage movies that I can tolerate. I was more than surprised to see that the shaky found footage did not last long, and the movie overall was an exceptional watch with excellent special effects.
Bite revolves around a young woman, Casey (Elma Begovic - Tear Us Apart (2016), Save Yourself (2015), Visitor (2015)) who is about to get married. Casey’s friends took her to Costa Rica for her bachelorette party which of course involved alcohol amongst other adults things. The girls were having a grand time partying in a club until someone drugged and brutally r**ed Casey in many ways. Casey’s engagement ring was also stolen and everything that happens to her so far is not the worst of it, yes, the nightmarish events do not end. The girls decided to go for a swim the next day although their dear friend was r**ed hours ago. I was shaking my head at this point because why in the world would you go swimming in murky water in the third world country not knowing what’s in the water. It did not take long for the poor bachelorette, Casey to get bitten on the leg in the disgusting water - why is everything happening to the bride-to-be?
Casey discovers that it is no ordinary bite as it quickly grew bigger, leaking a huge amount of discolored pus fast and feels like it is throbbing. Her fiance, Jared (Jordan Gray - A Mile in These Hooves (2014), Petty Thieves (2013), Speedbag (2006)) kept his distance from her after things went wrong one romantic evening. The movie was truly disgusting, and it does not end as orangish (not sure what to call it) things gush out from between her legs every time she moves her legs. The orangish things are consuming her apartment by taking over her wall, floors and basically everywhere. It was freakish and mind boggling trying to think what infected Casey and what is going to happen?
Overall, Bite was an enjoyable movie that I will not see again, and that is mainly because it is too gross for my liking. Horror fans that like the trailer and think they can handle unimaginable grotesque scenes then this movie are for you. The actors did an average job with their roles, except Elma Begovic, who played Casey convincingly well. The special effects and graphics were excellent as well as the music and cinematography. I, however, was not too thrilled with the storyline as it had plot holes. I gave this movie a six because it is a low budget film that delivers but it is just not for me.
