Blood Ties (1991) is a 1h 24-min American thriller horror TV movie that shot in Long Beach, California, USA and several locations in Los Angeles, California, USA. Director Jim McBride (Great Balls of Fire! (1989), Breathless (1983), The Big Easy (1986), Uncovered (1994)) did an average job executing Blood Ties which have a modern twist on the vampire theme and was funny at its best. Bloody Ties revolves around a modern vampire family from Carpathia, who are trying to adapt to the American life in Long Beach, California but is soon threatened by a group of sinister hunters.
The movie starts by introducing us to teenager Cody (Jason London - Dazed and Confused (1993), Jason and the Argonauts (2000), The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999), The Man in the Moon (1991)) in Loving County, Texas. Cody woke up one night to discover his parents staked and burned by Southern Coalition Against Vampirism (S.C.A.V.) which is a vampire hunter group. The vampire hunters allowed Cody to escape after they shot him with a crossbow because they were hoping that Cody would lead them to his extended family.
Harry Martin (Harley Venton - Guiding Light (1982), Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), Clear and Present Danger (1994), Falling Like This (2001)) is a journalist in Long Beach, California. Shrikes is a biker gang that warns Harry that Uncle Eli, who is the leader, is not happy with the articles Harry has been writing. Harry later went to inform Eli Chelarin (Patrick Bauchau - The Pretender (1996-2000), Panic Room (2002), Secretary (2002), A View to a Kill (1985)) of the Texas killings. Cody met Harry, which leads to Cody learning information about his parents that he did not know. The movie evolves to being a beautiful watch, but there were too many loose ends/plot holes leaving unanswered questions.
Just about everything was modern about the movie except for its modern take on vampirism. The movie flowed more like a soap opera than a horror thriller movie although there was horror in the film. I enjoyed the movie while it lasted, but it is something that I would not see again but do recommend other vampire fans to see because it is something new, just executed wrong.
