Where does Casper (1995) stand among horror films? Our review examines the scares, pacing, and what makes it unique in the genre.

Casper (1995) is an American family comedy fantasy film that was based on the Harvey Comics and also the cartoon character Casper the Friendly Ghost. Casper’s tone is much darker than the cartoons, comics, and sequels and had an estimated budget of $55 million and grossed over $287.9 million. Director Brad Silberling (A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), City of Angels (1998), Land of the Lost (2009)) did an outlandish job executing this film that was filmed in Rockport, Maine, USA and several locations in California, USA.

Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty - Raging Bull (1980), Kindergarten Cop (1990), Analyze That (2002)) is a spoiled heiress that discovers her father only left her the Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, Maine after he passed away. Carrigan and her attorney Paul/Dibbs (Eric Idle - Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Life of Brian (1979), The Meaning of Life (1983), Monty Python’s Flying Circus) discovers that the mansion might contain treasures. The duo soon found out that the mansion is haunted by Casper (voice - Malachi Pearson - The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper (1996-1998), Suburban Commando (1991), Lola (1990)) who is a friendly ghost. Casper was not the only occupant of the mansion, his prankster uncles who are known as the Ghostly Trio are also residing there. The uncles scared the heck out of the duo causing them to leave the mansion/Whipstaff.

Casper persuades Carrigan to bring paranormal therapist Dr.James Harvey (Bill Pullman -
Independence Day (1996), Lost Highway (1997), While You Were Sleeping (1995), Spaceballs (1987)) to Whipstaff. James and his teenage daughter, Kathleen/Kat relationship, is shaky while James is looking for his wife’s Amelia spirit/ghost. Kat and James moved into Whipstaff and took no time in encountering Casper, who tries to becomes friends with them while his uncles try their best to scare the father and daughter out of the house. Kat goes to school and instantly becomes popular after the students learn that she lives at the Whipstaff, which she agrees for their annual Halloween party to be hosted at.

Amber (Jessica Wesson - Flipper (1996), Milk Money (1994), Longshot (2001)) plans with her boyfriend Vic to humiliate Kat during the Halloween party because she is furious with Kat for stealing the attention she receives from school. The ghostly uncles tell James that they know Amelia, which turns out to be a prank leading them to go for a night out with James resulting James to fall into a manhole after getting wasted/drunk.

I love every bit of this movie as a kid and still love it for everything it has to offer, my kids even enjoy Casper. The graphics were excellent as well as the screenplay which explains just about everything without boring the viewers. There was some goofs/mishaps, but it did not take away from enjoying the film and from the film being a spectacular movie that will be enjoyed by most age groups. All of the characters did a fantastic job with their roles, and the sets were creative. I encourage everyone who has not seen Casper to give it a try because I am pretty sure you will not be disappointed if you watch it with an open mind.
