Where does Closer to God (2014) stand among horror films? Our review examines the scares, pacing, and what makes it unique in the genre.
Closer to God (2014) is a science fiction, thriller horror movie that was filmed in several locations in Tennessee. Director, executive producer and writer Billy Senese (Tucked Away (2007), The Suicide Tapes (2010), Intruder (2011)) did an okay job overall directing his first full-length movie. Billy did a good job building up the tension in the movie and an awesome job with the ending of the movie. I love how the director touched on certain subjects (religion, science, philosophy, cloning, etc.) but disliked that he did not elaborate on those subjects. The movie is slow paced but the tension builds up in this dark drama makes you anxious to see more. There are so many emotions flowing in this movie that it is hard not to connect to at least one of the characters. This movie is not for horror fans that like to watch a movie that contains action, suspense and jump scares.
Closer to God is about Victor (Jeremy Childs - The Last Castle (2001), Country Strong (2010), Prism (2007)) is a genetic scientist. Victor has cloned a little human girl that he named Elizabeth, who reminds me of Frankenstein. She was born via c-section with no one knowing of her existence because she was made up from several anonymous gene donors. Victor believes that there is nothing wrong with cloning and what he is doing is totally right. He knows that his experiment (Elizabeth) can go wrong, so he keeps her in the hospital to closely monitor her. His secret is soon known, and Victor is in a heap load of trouble with the majority of the people including government agencies and religious groups. He did the only thing he can think of and took Elizabeth to his beautiful home that his family also resides.
The director did a splendid job bringing us great creepy horror moments when they do occur which is very little. The cinematography, shots, sound effects, and special effects were nicely done. I wish that the movie answered the points that it mentioned in the movie. I would watch this movie again although I gave it a five because it was an interesting watch for a rainy day.
