Guillermo del Toro‘s first feature length film Cronos (1993). Cronos is visually striking and takes a completely different spin on the classic vampire tale. Cronos scored 22 award wins and 5 award nominations. Cronos had an estimated movie budget of $2 million and grossed $621 thousand at US box office. Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, and Claudio Brook star in Cronos.
Cronos follows the life/death of Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi) as he discovers the secret to immortality. I really love the device that turns Jesus into a vampire; it mixes an old machine that filters the owners’ blood through a bug. It is something like the philosopher’s stone mixed with alchemy and mysticism. That alone sounds so weird, but that just opens you up to the originality of this vampire film. Ron Perlman makes an appearance as the main man trying to get the device back.
Cronos was recommended to me by my good friend Frank A. I enjoyed the performances from all the actors and the back story, that is what captivated my attention. The special effects were not expected, and the tone of the film was something that I wish more vampire movies had. I think I will buy the Cronos Blu-ray version so I can watch it a few more times.
