Cthulhu (2007) is a rated R 1h 40 min American drama thriller horror film that was shot in several locations in Oregon, USA, and Washington, USA. First-time director Dan Gildark did a terrific job trying to execute Cthulhu which was loosely based on H. P. Lovecraft‘s 1936 novel titled, The Shadow over Innsmouth. Cthulhu is recognized for having a protagonist who faces horrors after returning for a relative’s funeral in a small town. The movie contains s**ual content, brief nudity, masturbation, blood, flashbacks, rapes, cult, violence, and bad language.
Cthulhu revolves around young history professor Russ (Jason Cottle - Wag the Dog (1997), The Wedding Singer (1998), Act of Valor (2012), Infamous (2009)) returning to his hometown to execute his late mother’s estate. Russ reunites with his family and Mike (Scott Patrick Green - Grimm (2011-2016), Elephant (2003), Green Room (2015), My Own Private Idaho (1991)) who is his childhood friend. Russ’s father is the leader of a New Age cult.
Russ stumbles upon a warehouse with a wall that has hundreds of names written on it, and he wakes up in his motel room that night to discover a cudgel in his room after dreaming about it. The cudgel had the word "Dagon" written on it. A drunk told Russ that the cudgel is used for sacrifice leading to one event leading to another which results in Russ learning about a mass sacrifice that is going to happen soon.
I had some hope for this film, but that was dragged out the door during the first few minutes after the first scene. It is a shame to see this movie in a different name when it was already made in a better version, Dagon (2001) because it is insulting to title the film Cthulhu.
I believe the writer and director were more focused on Russ’s (the main character) confused s**uality and not on Lovecraft’s novel and yes I know it was loosely based on Lovecraft. The film was probably loosely based on Lovecraft so that his name can be used for publicity for the movie. I gave this movie a one and would have given it a zero, but our score meter does not allow that so please refrain from watching this film even if it is a rainy day with nothing else to do. Everything was horrible in this production.
