Horror fans will enjoy our review of Day of the Dead (2008), where we cover its story, scares, and how it ranks among modern horror classics.

Day of the Dead (2008) is a rated R 1h 26 min American action thriller horror movie that was shot in several locations in Bulgaria including New Boyana Film Studios, Sofia, Bulgaria; Pravetz, Bulgaria and Sofia, Bulgaria. Director Steve Miner (Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), Lake Placid (1999), Forever Young (1992)) should not have directed this remake. George A. Romero mentioned that Day of the Dead (1985) is one of his favorite films of his zombie films and it is one of my favorites also, so it was sad to see this remake is butchered the way it was. I was not happy upon hearing about the remake and was hesitant, and after seeing the remake, I knew that my feelings were right.

Day of the Dead revolves around Sarah Bowman (Mena Suvari - American Beauty (1999), American Pie (1999), American Pie 2 (2001), American Reunion (2012)) and her a few military commandos. Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction (1994), Dawn of the Dead (2004), Mission: Impossible III (2006), Mission: Impossible II (2000)) plays Captain Rhodes. The Government quarantines the small Colorado town by guarding the town’s border to prevent anyone from leaving, but that did not help the hospitals soon became overfilled with infected people who turned into zombies.

It did not take long for the dead to go on a rampage and these zombies are not our regular zombies as they can withstand damage, move through ventilation shafts, crawl on walls and ceilings.

With all said, the director did a great job shooting the movie but did not do such a good job covering all of the scenes that look like it was taken from another film from the past five years. There is no characterization, and the actors gave us below average performances. Horror fans should stay clear of Day of the Dead (2008) because it was an awful film but please do watch the “original” Day of the Dead (1985) directed by George A. Romero.
