Demon (2015) is a 1h 34-min rated R Polish comedy drama-thriller-horror film that was shot in Swierze Gorne, Mazowieckie, Poland. Director and co-writer Marcin Wrona (My Flesh My Blood (2009), The Christening (2010), Magnet Man (2001)) executed the movie astonishingly well.
Marcin Wrona committed suicide by hanging himself on September 19, 2015, in Gdynia in his hotel room while his film, Demon was being shown at the movie festival in Gdynia. The film was shot with steady hands, unnerving score and not so good humor. I fell in love with the sets as some scenes along with the backgrounds sends a sense of dread through me with the creepy backwoods and atmosphere.
Demon revolves around Piotr (Itay Tiran - Lebanon (2009), Afterthought (2015), Forgiveness (2006)) who unknowingly dug up a skeleton in the yard that slowly subsumed him during his wedding ceremony. Piotr was all ready to marry his bride, Zaneta (Agnieszka Zulewska - Chemo (2015), 16.03 (2016), Sanctuary (2012)) in the countryside in Poland. Piotr and Zaneta decide to keep their wedding at her parents’ old secluded Polish homes.
Piotr found/saw Ronaldo (Tomasz Zietek - Stones for the Rampart (2014), Demon (2015), Carte Blanche (2015), Body (2015)) digging up the front yard with a huge tractor-like machine. He did not think anything of it and later runs into his brother-in-law Jasny (Tomasz Schuchardt - You Are God (2012), The Christening (2010), In the Name of (2013)), and the two began getting ready for the event. Piotr for no reason known to us/me, head out into the rain and started to dig the same area as Ronaldo was digging up earlier and finds a human skeleton. He then awakes in his car with no memories as to how he got there or what happened that night. Piotr began acting erratically on the morning of his wedding, and it is not because of wedding jitters.
Itay Tiran did a fantastic job with his role as he switches from an average guy to one that is possessed. His convulsions, shaking back and forth, twitchy movements and other possessed movements were convincing. The other actors gave us good acting/performances also, but Tiran was the best by far. The action scenes were absolutely amazing, but the scares would have been better if the humor which was not good was added in. It would have been better and scarier without the humor. The humor just killed a bit of the movie. The cinematography, shot selection, camerawork, lighting, sound and special effects were excellent. I recommend horror fans to give Demon a try because although the scares are not effective, the storyline is effective.
