Where does Devil's Due (2014) stand among horror films? Our review examines the scares, pacing, and what makes it unique in the genre.
Devil’s Due is not a good horror movie, and the storyline could have been better. It is about a newlywed couple Samantha McCall (Allison Miller - There’s Always Woodstock, Blood: The Last Vampire, Cold Case) and Zach McCall (Zach Gilford - The Purge 2, The Last Stand, In Our Nature), who went to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for their honeymoon and came back home with a nonreturnable present. Zach and Samantha are surprised and thrilled that they are having a baby, although the pregnancy seems to occur before the marriage, and Samantha is on birth control pills. Zach soon starts to discover strange behaviors from his wife while videotaping her and soon suspects something odd/wrong is happening with her pregnancy. Some strange behaviors were when Samantha went into the supermarket and started eating raw meat, although she is a vegetarian. She seemed to have superhero powers when she smashed a car’s window that bumped her car. Don’t forget the strange, disfigured shape her stomach gets/has when she sleeps, as though the baby is about to rip through her stomach and all the odd movements that are not normal.
Director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett executed a bad storyline well. Devil’s Due does not seem original, and it lacks scare factors one hundred percent. Devil’s Due contains foul language, violence, suspense, and slight gore.
I like their wedding ceremony and how Zach climbed up the pipe the night before their wedding to tell Samantha that he wants to videotape their marriage because he wants it for memories. That was so sweet. The ending of the movie rocks because it is so unpredictable and a major surprise to see who caused everything to happen.
I was hyped to see Devil’s Due after watching the horror trailer and was genuinely disappointed after seeing it. It is not the awesomely great devil baby movie I thought it would be. I recommend that viewers wait for this movie to come out on DVD, that is, if you’re interested in watching it. I don’t think it will make it far in the movie theater, so therefore it should be provided very soon on DVD. I gave this movie a five because it was not bad but not good. Will I see it again? Most likely not.
