Our review of DeVour (2005) dives into the story, the scares, and whether it truly delivers the horror fans crave.
Devour (2005) is an American horror movie that was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Director David Winkler (Rocky Balboa (2006), The Wedding Wish (2007), Finding Graceland (1998)) did not have much experience with directing this movie, and it shows in his work. I believe this movie had potential, and he would have done a great job if he had more skill, experience, and a higher budget. Devour contains s**ual language, references, content and visual s**ual scenes. Devour also contains violence, unlimited gore, bad language, drug (pot) use, suspense and frightening scenes. My review below will contain spoilers about the beginning of the movie - I never give away the ending.
Devour is about young Jake Gray (Jensen Ackles - Supernatural (2005), Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010), Smallville (2001)) who has been having terrorizing visions about murder and self-incurred injuries and mutilation. The Pathway is a game that his dead friends Conrad (Teach Grant - The Tall Man (2012), Down River (2013), Repeaters (2010)) and Dakota (Dominique Swain - Lolita (1997), Girl (1998), Face/Off (1997)) introduced him to. He blamed the death of his friends on the game and started an investigation. Jake soon learns that Aiden Kater (Martin Cummins - Poltergeist: The Legacy (1996), Dark Angel (2000), Strange Frequency (2001)) runs the game. Aiden also has a group of devil worshippers. They have been using the game to look for a special individual as they convince others to kill. The victims of the game then, in turn, commit gruesome self-mutilations to themselves.
Jake receives the help of his friend Marisol (Shannyn Sossamon - Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), A Knight’s Tale (2001)) who knows a little about the mystic occult. Jake later learns that the game, “The Pathway” was indeed created to find him because he is a special individual. Jake discovers the truth because a man named Ivan Reisz (William Sadler - Iron Man 3 (2013), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), The Green Mile (1999)) told him that his wife Anne Kilton was kidnapped by Kater while she was pregnant and the baby was used in a sacrifice to the devil. Jake went in pursuit of Kater and found him. Kater then told Jake that Anne is the devil, her baby was stolen by a human and is alive.
I gave Devour a five because it was a nice watch for a rainy day. I would not recommend hard core horror fans to watch this movie. I will not be watching this movie again. The acting was on point; the cinematography was excellent, but there were plot holes and I blame it on a low budget. There was not much horror in this movie.
