Dolly Dearest (1991) is an American thriller horror movie that was filmed in Santa Clarita, California, USA. Director and screenplay writer Maria Lease (St. Elsewhere (1982), Better Off Dead… (1985), The Practice (1997), Starman (1986)) did an excellent job executing this movie that is a cliche of Child’s Play (1988). The director did a great job blending humor and creepy moments together. The movie is a cliche, but it ripped off Child’s Play nicely and had enough of its own content to make it stand out. There is no gore in this movie so gore hounds beware as you will not have the pleasure of seeing huge amounts of blood (blood splatter - yes) in this movie.
Dolly Dearest revolves around an American family, the Wades moving to Mexico. Elliot Wade (Sam Bottoms - Apocalypse Now (1979), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), The Last Picture Show (1971), Seabiscuit (2003)) is the new owner of a factory name Dolly Dearest in Mexico. The factory is conveniently located next to an ancient Mayan tomb of Sanzia which means Satan on Earth. An archeologist tried to take it but ends up dead and did the worse thing possible, accidently release a malevolent spirit of an evil child into a few dolls. Elliot’s daughter took one of the dolls home, and death soon surrounds them. The staff soon started dy**g one by one. What happens next is for you to discover as the movie resembles Child’s Play but has enough of its own matter to make it different.
The movie overall is entertaining and deserves a score of 5, and that is not because the doll is creepier than Chucky. The special effects were done nicely but not excellent, but you do have to take into consideration is that it is a low budget movie, and maybe the budget was not there to make the special effects excellent. The actors did a good job but are not perfect as well as the makeup department. Chucky fans should give this movie a try.
