Dr. Giggles (1992) is a Japan American comedy mystery thriller horror movie that is 95 minutes long and was filmed in Portland, Oregon, USA. Director and co-writer Manny Coto (24 (2001), Dexter (2006), Star Trek: Enterprise (2001)) did an amazing job executing this funny movie. Many horror fans might not like this movie, but it was a great comedy relief with the right amount of horror, creepiness and crazy deaths.
Dr. Giggles is about Doctor Evan Randall, Jr./Dr.Giggles (Larry Drake - L.A. Law (1986), Darkman (1990), Bean (1997), American Pie 2 (2001)) who is a dangerous maniac running around butchering people. Dr. Giggles’ back story was genuinely creepy and a little sad. Dr. Evan Jr. and his father Dr. Evan lived in a town, Moorehigh in 1957. The townspeople became suspicious about the disappearances of many of the patients of Dr. Evans. Upon the townspeople’s investigation, they found out that Dr. Evan and his son were taking out patients’ hearts and putting the heart into his dead mother body in an effort to bring her back to live. Needless to say, the townspeople stoned Dr. Evan to death while Evan, Jr. ran away and disappeared. Dr. Evan Jr. got the name Dr. Giggles because of his hideous laugh.
Dr. Giggles puts together a list of names, after breaking into his father’s abandoned office. Dr. Giggles is on a mission to save Jennifer’s (Holly Marie Combs - Charmed (1998), Pretty Little Liars (2010), Picket Fences (1992)) life as she has the same heart condition as his mother. Dr. Giggles kills/wounds Jennifer’s father and soon killed investigating officer Hank Magruder (Richard Bradford - The Untouchables (1987), Man in a Suitcase (1967), The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), Missing (1982)) while Officer Hank shot and wounded Dr. Giggles with a bullet on his side. Dr. Giggles played a doctor on himself in his secret hideout to remove the bullet. Jennifer finds out that one of her heart valves is damaged from the stress of the evening. Jennifer needs surgery to save her life - behold, Dr. Giggles went on a killing spree and killed all the doctors in his way. Jennifer flees for her life, and someone dies - is it Giggles or Jennifer?
There was a lot of funny, wild and creative death scenes that includes scalpel stabbing, giant Band-Aid over the mouth/nose death, blood pressure cuff strangulation, pointed thermometer stabbing under tongue and doctors nasal flashlight ramped up someones nose. The movie is definitely for the open minded and some might question, why do I enjoy watching this movie when I oppose others - my answer, maybe I was in a quirky mood. The actors did a believable job, and the sets were nicely done.
