Dust Devil (1992) is a would-be great movie but fell short somewhere. I really liked the buildup and the underlying lore behind the dust devil but something was way off. I think the editing must have thrown off the movie.
The flaws stand out in the cut threatrical version but the special directors cut (Richard Stanley - Dust Devil: The Final Cut) 107-minute version of the movie makes the shaman and cop characters deeper and more interesting.
This young woman (Chelsea Field) runs away from her abusive husband and find a mysterious hitch-hiker later known as the Dust Devil (Robert John Burke). The Dust Devils slaughters people in an old ritual magic way. The Dust Devil is actually loosely based on the Nhadiep, a Namibian mythical serial killer.
The actors (Robert John Burke, Zakes Mokae (cop) and Chelsea Field) gave a great performance and Zakes Mokae’s character shines in the Dust Devil: The Final Cut. The sound department really dropped the ball with some really horrible dubbing at times.
Not one of the best horror movies but one every horror fan should watch in their lifetime, make sure it is the Dust Devil: The Final Cut version.
