The Eye (2008) is a 1h 38-min PG-13 American supernatural mystery horror film that is a remake of The Eye (2002) from the Pang Brothers. The movie had an estimated budget of $12 million and grossed over $56 million at the box office. Directors David Moreau (It Boy (2013), Seuls (2017)) and Xavier Palud (Intrusion (2015), Blind Man (2012)) had worked together before on Them (2006) and did an average job working together. David Moreau was not allowed in the editing room during the post-production stage and was not pleased with the final version of The Eye. David considered taking his name off the film but decided to leave it. The film is not an outstanding movie, but I love that it explored mental illnesses (monothematic delusion/ mirrored-self misidentification) and other things.
Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba - Sin City (2005), Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Valentine’s Day (2010)) has been blind since age five and is now a classical violinist from Los Angeles. Sydney undergoes a cornea transplant fifteen years later after the firecrackers took her eyesight and now she can see again although it was a little blurry at first. Sydney shortly after began experiencing terrifying visions that mostly includes fire and people dying. If that is not bad enough, she also sees dead people and a girl even passed through her body as though she was not there. Sydney is hell bent on that she is not going insane and tries to investigate the paranormal of her new vision.
Sydney and Dr. Paul Faulkner (Alessandro Nivola - Face/Off (1997), American Hustle (2013), Jurassic Park III (2001), Coco Before Chanel (2009)) travels to Mexico because her cornea donor Ana Cristina Martinez originated there. Ana’s mother told them that fire and death visions are things that Ana foretold and Ana hanged herself because she could not stop it from happening. Sydney saw the little girl from one of her visions in a car next to her and realizes that her vision is to guide her to save people from dying. What will Sydney do with her new profound gift that she cannot control, and that terrifies her sometimes?
I am not sure what to say about this film except that it was not the best and it greatly disappointed me because the cover image gives me the impression that the movie was going to be a fantastic horror flick. There was not one actor that gave us a decent performance, and it is sad to say that even Jessica Alba’s performance was mediocre. The sets were average as well as the musical score, sound, special effects, and makeup. The screenplay was weak and had many plot holes that cannot be missed. I would not recommend The Eye to anyone to see because it will make you shake your heading while wondering what mess you have gotten yourself into this time.
