Eragon (2006) is a British-American fantasy-adventure film that was based on author Christopher Paolini best-selling novel of the same name. I applaud the first-time director Stefen Fangmeier for taking a risk and executing something that is watchable. Stefen is known for his work on Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) as the visual effects director. There is a lot of movies out there by well-known directors that is not watchable with a score of one, but Stefen’s first attempt showed that he has talent. I gave Eragon a four because of the great special effects, good acting and because of the director executing a poor/weak script into something that is somewhat tolerable to watch. Eragon had an estimated budget of $100 million and grossed over $249.5 million at the box offices.
Arya (Sienna Guillory - Love Actually (2003), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)) is an elf princess of Ellesmera and a former dragon rider who stole a stone from the evil king. She is seen running away from the evil king, Galbatorix (Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Being John Malkovich (1999), Burn After Reading (2008), Empire of the Sun (1987)) who will do anything to get back his stone. Arya used her magic to send the stone to a forest that is far away which happens to be the same forest that 17-year-old farm boy Eragon is hunting for food in the country of Alagaesia. Eragon (Ed Speleers - A Lonely Place to Die (2011), Plastic (2014), Howl (2015)) did not know the power of the stone and decided to take it so he can trade it for food. It did not take long for him to realize that the stone is an egg as a blue dragon is seen hatching from it.
Eragon received a magical mark that burned into his palm as he touches the dragon sending a magical wave that can be felt by everyone in the area that has a connection to the legend of the dragon. Skip forward and we see that Eragon and the fully grown dragon, Saphira can communicate by hearing each other’s thoughts. Eragon and Brom (Jeremy Irons - The Lion King (1994), Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), Dead Ringers (1988)) has no choice but to leave his Eragon home.
Will Eragon and Saphira be able to set the village people free from the tyrant Galbatorix as the ancient prophecy says that they can with the dragon? The special effects were fantastic, but unfortunately, the acting skills from the actors were weak as well as a sketchy script. The script was not clear, it was all over the place with major plot holes. The movie does not follow the novel’s plotline which made me think, how much did the screenplay writer actually read before writing the screenplay. There are numerous differences from the book to the movie including characters, script, plot, etc. At this point I am not sure if the actors performances were weak at all, maybe they did the best they could with a horrid screenplay. Eragon should not be seen by people who read the novel because they will be hugely disappointed, like me. The dragon had feathers where it was mentioned in the book several times that the dragon wings is a thin membrane.
