Extinction (2015) is a science fiction horror movie that is filled with drama and is also known as Welcome to Harmony (2015). Director Miguel Angel Vivas (Kidnapped (2010), I’ll See You in My Dreams (2003), The Bogeyman (2002)) did a great job executing a somewhat original zombie movie. I was attached to the film from the very few first minutes of seeing it, and it was a spectacular treat - not just another zombie movie. I do enjoy my zombie movie series and movies, but my review is not biased on my love for zombies. I gave this movie a six because it was too slow paced. Will I watch it again - most likely. There are not much jump scares and thrills because the storyline is straightforward with little suspense. There were all sorts of emotions flowing through me as I watched the humans and zombies. I did not like the back and forth of present day and the future.
Extinction is about Patrick (Matthew Fox) and Jack (Jeffrey Donovan) being neighbors and living in the cold wasteland. They both have a history that made them separated emotionally and physically. They have no choice but to put their past aside and reunite to save a little girl. Most of the human race is living in a snow covered area seeking shelter from the virus that plagued their hometown. They now think, nine years later that they are safe, but their dreams were quickly tarnished as the infected appear again. There is not much to say about Extinction without giving too much of it away, and I will not do that to zombie fans.
Patrick and Jack’s squabble remind me of AMC’s The Walking Dead series. The special effects, CGI, cinematography, sets and makeup artist were all extremely good. I would love to see this movie made into an awesome TV series, I can just imagine. All horror fans should watch this movie at least once because I feel the plot is unique.
