Horror fans searching for a breakdown of Freddy vs. Jason (2003) will find our review covers the plot, themes, and the shocking ending everyone talks about.
Ronny Yu directed Freddy vs. Jason (2003) with an estimated $30 million movie budget that grossed $82.6 million at the US box office. Freddy vs. Jason scored two movie awards and was nominated for ten more movie awards.
Freddy vs. Jason takes place in a town where Freddy Krueger reawakens his knowledge of himself by allowing Jason Vorhees to make the killing. But Jason can’t stop, and Freddy is getting madder. He won’t let Jason get away with his glory. The kids lead them to a mental institute to find pills so they can suppress their dreams. But Freddy possesses one and relieves them of their supply. Jason comes around and sees them but is put into a deep sleep with tranquilizers. The kids tie Jason up in their van and take him back home to Camp Crystal Lake. One of the kids is also put under tranquilizers and watches as the kid version of Jason drowns in the lake.
Jason wakes up and breaks out of the van, and Freddy enters the real world. Freddy Krueger vs. Jason Vorhees’s fight ensues until they reach the dock. While duking it out, the kids create a line of fire. Jason rips off Freddy’s arm, and Freddy takes Jason’s sword. Freddy appears to kill Jason and goes for the kids, but Jason is not dead and sneaks up behind him. Jason impales Freddy through the stomach with Freddy’s arm and then falls into the lake. Freddy drops the sword, and one of the kids picks it up and cuts off Freddy’s head. Freddy falls into the water, and so does the head. The kids drive away. A girl and a boy in love reunited. But are Freddy and Jason dead? No! Jason walks out of the water with Freddy’s head in his hand, and Freddy winks at you.
Watching the showdown between the two horror icons was teased numerous times, and you can not help but feel that the rules were bent in the other favor whenever they made a killer blow. The visuals and story felt rushed. I wish the writers had spent more time ironing out the loose ends. The visuals and special effects also could have used extra polish to deliver a better movie experience. I felt like the entire movie was the lead-up teaser opening to the actual film. We did not, and may never get a sequel, so we are left with a broken movie to something that could have been so much better. A significant letdown for my huge expectations, but I will take it as fan service alone.
