Exploring Gothika (2003) through our review, we cover its story, scares, and how it fits into the broader horror genre landscape.
Gothika (2003) is a 1h 38-min American paranormal mystery thriller horror movie that had an estimated budget of $40 million and grossed over $141.6 million at the box office. Director Mathieu Kassovitz (Amelie (2001), Munich (2005), La Haine (1995), The Fifth Element (1997)) did an average job executing this movie that was an okay watch but nothing to get too excited over. Thrilla and horrors, movie lovers will enjoy the film containing a corrupt mental institution with creepy ghost elements as well as a r**ist/murderer element. The production stopped for eight weeks because Robert Downey Jr. accidentally grabbed Halle Berry’s arm too hard and broke it. There were unpredictable moments that will not leave goosebumps but will let you join in on the chase as Miranda discovers the truth.
Gothika revolves around psychiatrist Miranda Grey who works in a women’s mental hospital and wakes one morning to find herself accused of murdering her husband. We follow Miranda’s (Halle Berry - X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Cloud Atlas (2012), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men 2 (2003)) journey to see how she ends up on the other side of the bars. Miranda does not remember what happened on the night her husband who was also a psychiatrist was murdered. Miranda realizes that she has a vision of a young girl that died several years ago that same evening. The young girl wants Miranda to help her but cannot since she is stuck in the institution. She made friends with Chloe Sava (Penelope Cruz - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), Vanilla Sky (2001), Volver (2006), Blow (2001)) and began feeling sympathy towards Chloe which is strange because she never felt that way towards her patients. Miranda starts to place everything together as the movie progresses leading us to an unexpected twist.
There was tension as we the viewer tries to figure out who the killer is. It was not hard to follow this film as the storyline was simple and easy to understand. Gothika had a fantastic atmosphere that was brilliantly done with blue tones. The location chosen to film the movie was the right place as the actors said it was cold, and the air made them feel as though they were really never alone, spooky. I would recommend horror fans to see Gothika if you want to see something with a disturbing twist, tension, mystery, little action, and thrills.
