John Carpenter’s “Halloween” is one of the best horror films ever made. It introduced the world to the iconic villain Michael Myers and his relentless pursuit of his prey. “Halloween” opens with a 6-year- old Michael Myers killing his older sister with a knife. He is taken to a Sanitarium, but escapes as an adult. He steals a white mask and goes back to Haddonfield and stops at his former house. When teenager Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) drops off a key at the house for her father to sell it, Michael begins to stalk her.
Michael’s reign of terror begins as he kills unsuspecting teenagers while being pursued by his psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence). When Laurie confronts Michael, she desperately fights to survive against this terrifying being.
“Halloween” is a movie that does a great job of building suspense throughout the film. The musical score only helps to add to that effect when the audience sees the world through Michael’s eyes. Michael follows Laurie constantly in the film even in broad daylight, which shows his demented state of mind. Laurie has no idea that she is being stalked as she goes about her day.
The movie also created a horror villain that was frightening in many aspects. Michael Myers never talks or makes a sound when killing and stalking. When he fights against Laurie, he never utters a word. This kind of behavior makes him very scary because he appears to be inhuman.
“Halloween” has gone on to be one of the greatest horror movies ever made. There have been countless imitations, but none can compare to this horror classic.
