Our review of Jason X (2001) dives into the story, the scares, and whether it truly delivers the horror fans crave.

Jason X (2001) is directed by James Isaac with New Line Cinema. Jason X had an estimated $11 million movie budget and grossed $13 million at the US box office.

New Line Cinema tried to make up for the horrible Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993) with this campy horror story with sci-fi overtones. As the movie begins, it seems that a scientific research center has been built over Crystal Lake. The center’s main focus of research is, of course, Jason Vorhees. Jason soon escapes, only to be cryogenically frozen along with the head research scientist. Flash forward to the future when a class of history students on a field trip to Earth uncover Jason and the scientist. Before you know it, Jason is thawed out and murdering every teen and space marine he comes across aboard a spaceship bound for "Earth 2". The kill scenes are fresh and inventive, with Kane Hodder breathing new life into his portrayal of the masked psycho. Just when you think that Jason is down for good, there comes Uber-Jason, a cybernetically enhanced version of the slasher!

The film is plagued with a sparse storyline that makes you anxious for the next Jason kill scene to pass the time until the film finally ends. The acting was subpar with Rowan (Lexa Doig) doing an incredible job with her role. Jason just seemed so out of place but making him into a Uber-Jason helped alleviate that feeling a bit. Die-hard Jason fans may not like this new take like me. The script felt rushed, disconnected with the audience and longtime fans, and too much of a different experience.
