Jumper (2008) is an American science-fiction-action adventure film that was loosely based on Steven Gould‘s 1992 science fiction novel, Jumper. The movie is 1h 28-minutes and was shot in 20 cities in 14 countries between September 2006 - February 2007. It had an estimated budget of $85 million and grossed over $222.2 million at the box office. Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity (2002), Edge of Tomorrow (2014)) did an excellent job executing this film, but the editing department hammered it by cutting a little too much out of it.
Jumper revolves around David Rice, who is a young man that can teleport and uses his extraordinary ability to get away from a secret society that will do just about anything to kill him. David Rice (Hayden Christensen - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005), Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002), Awake (2007)) is known as a jumper because of his teleportation abilities that can be used to rob banks.
Roland (Samuel L. Jackson - Pulp Fiction (1994), The Hateful Eight (2015), Django Unchained (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)) and David had an encounter that will change David’s life drastically. Roland is part of a secret society/Paladin organization that finds jumpers which they think might be a threat to the world and eliminate them. David’s girlfriend Millie (Rachel Bilson - Hart of Dixie (2011-2015), The O.C. (2003-2007), New York, I Love You (2008)) runs afoul of the secret organization which leaves David with no other choice but to take/get rid of Roland and the organization. He teams up with another member by the name of Griffin (Jamie Bell - The Adventures of Tintin (2011), Billy Elliot (2000), King Kong (2005)) who is a reckless jumper.
Jumper was an amazingly entertaining movie to watch, and the trailer did not do this movie justice as the trailers left me with the wrong impression of this film. Hayden Christensen was the best actor in this film by far as his performance was exceptionally well done and his body, physique fits the character profile. He also handles the action scenes nicely, and his romantic chemistry with Rachel Bilson was realistic. All of the actors gave good performances but like I said the best actor in this film was Hayden, who has not done a great job in other movies. As for Samuel L. Jackson, I could not take him seriously with his snow white toupee; it was just too much for me to handle as he looks silly in it. The CGI/special FX were excellent as well as the sound, sets, and atmosphere.
Jumper’s problem was that we would see characters showing up in the film and randomly disappearing. Two of those characters are Diane Lane, who had about 90 seconds of screen time and Kristen Stewart, who had one line. The ending of this film appears as if there was a shortage of time and they had to end the movie without explaining much to us, the viewers. With all said, Jumper is a great movie to watch with a crowd as it is entertaining and full of life.
