Knowing (2009) is a 2h 1-min USA/UK/Australian science-fiction mystery thriller that was shot in 22 locations in Victoria, Australia and Massachusetts, USA. Alex Proyas (Dark City (1998), I, Robot (2004), The Crow (1994)) did an excellent job executing this mind-boggling movie that can be all too real for some viewers. The movie consistently makes you feel as though something is about to happen with a mystery feel to it as the action proceed and out emotional attachment to the film grows. Knowing is a PG-13 rating movie that contains an enormous amount of graphic violence that might be too intense for younger viewers.
Knowing begins with a young school girl, Lucinda Embry (Lara Robinson) 50 years ago writing/scribbling down numbers that will be placed in the school time capsule that will be opened 50 years later. John Koestler (Nicolas Cage - Leaving Las Vegas (1995), National Treasure (2004), Moonstruck (1987), Kick-Ass (2010)) and his son Caleb lives by themselves but were the lucky ones to receive Lucinda’s paper from the time capsule. John believes that everything is left to chance and not planned events. John is a huge part of the puzzle and so is his son Caleb (Chandler Canterbury - Repo Men (2010), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), After.Life (2009)) who was chosen for a greater cause.
A chain reaction of events soon starts as a result of the numbered papers and the predictions that were written from the past. John sets out to find Lucinda’s daughter Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne - X-Men: First Class (2011), Insidious (2010), 28 Weeks Later (2007), Neighbors (2014)) who he thinks will be able to help him figure out the puzzle. Diana’s daughter Abby (Lara Robinson) and Caleb shares a common trait.
The FX was marvelously done and could not be better as the disaster scenes feel all too real leaving my guest and me feeling shocked and scared. Two realistic scenes were the plane and the subway scene. There will be viewers who enjoy the movie for what it is without reading too much into it and then there will be viewers like me who realizes that some of the predictions might be true/happening.
I am a huge fan of Nicholas Cage, so I have to say that he gave us an excellent performance, and the other actors did not fall too far behind in their performances. The movie might be considered to be a cliche to others of its kind, but it had enough subject matter to stand out from the rest and the totally awesome ending where everything was explained/covered with its storytelling and visual feast that is offered us. I would highly recommend horror fans to watch this movie as soon as possible because of the spectacular fx work, the haunting foretelling and chilling realities.
