Horror fans will enjoy our review of Magi (2016), where we cover its story, scares, and how it ranks among modern horror classics.
Magi (2015) is a 2h 12-min Turkish horror film that was shot in Istanbul, Turkey. Director and writer by Hasan Karacadag (Dabbe: Cin Carpmasi (2013), Semum (2008), Dabbe (2006), Dabbe: Bir Cin Vakasi (2012)) did an incredible job executing this bone-chilling movie. There was one minimal jump scare, right amount of gore, effective death scenes, nicely done suspense scenes and more than enough twists that will keep you guessing. Magi will leave you thinking if not for days then weeks about demons and if they exist or not. The movie contains the right amount of creepiness, horror and--that will most likely get under many viewers’ skin and make them crawl as some scenes are bone chillingly good to the point where your spine will tingle. The plot was ingenious with a strong story, and so was the surprise ending that I did not predict or guess. I am not a fan of slow paced movies, but Magi is one film that I might see again and would recommend to supernatural horror fans.
Magi revolves around Olivia (Lucie Pohl - Must Love Death (2009), Not Fade Away (2012), Endlich Sex! (2004), Allerd Fishbein’s in Love (2000)) and her sister Marla. Olivia is a journalist in New York who decides to visit her sister Marla Watkins (Brianne Davis - Jarhead (2005), Synchronicity (2015), Prom Night (2008), Six (2017)) in Istanbul, Turkey because Marla is pregnant. Marla moved to Turkey a few years ago and lived in an expensive neighborhood with her recently divorced Iranian artist husband. Marla teaches English at a language school and decides to keep the baby, and that is when it did not take long for evil things to begin happening to her and around her and for us to gain sight of the ancient Mesopotamian mythological creatures. Marla dies a few days before her due date and Olivia takes it upon herself to investigate her sister’s death which resulted in her discovering that demons could be real.
Viewers should be warned that being knowledgeable of what angels, Jinns (Djinns) and Devils are will help you understand this film. A little information for those who does not know the differences between jinns, angels, and devils. Jinns cannot be seen by humankind, but they live on earth in a world parallel to humankind and is ranked lower than angels. Jinns can fly, have superb powers, can take the form or possess humans and animals. Devils are the opposite of God and seek chaos, destruction, death, etc. Angels are spiritual beings that are superior to humans because they are more powerful and intelligent.
