Horror fans will enjoy our review of Midnight Special (2016), where we cover its story, scares, and how it ranks among modern horror classics.
Midnight Special (2016) is an American science fiction drama movie filled with adventure that was shot in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Director and writer Jeff Nichols (Mud (2012), Take Shelter (2011), Shotgun Stories (2007)) did an excellent executing this good sci-fi thriller that was not short of tension and suspense. The characters were rich with personalities as well as the subtext with a bit of humanity that is evident in our world today.
Roy (Michael Shannon - Man of Steel (2013), Take Shelter (2011), Boardwalk Empire (2010), The Iceman (2012)) is a father who will do anything to protect his eight-year-old son. Roy’s son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher - St. Vincent (2014), Aloha (2015), Playing It Cool (2014)) has a unique gift that Roy has to protect. Roy and his ex-wife, Sarah and his friend Lucas (Joel Edgerton - Warrior (2011), Black Mass (2015), The Gift (2015), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)) who is a police officer joined Roy on his journey to protect Alton. Roy, Lucas and Sarah (Kirsten Dunst - Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), Melancholia (2011)) broke numerous laws to keep Alton safe from a religious cult/group and the mysterious government task force. Alton’s gift was a mystery at first, but it slowly unfolded before our eyes
I love this film and for the portrayal/meaning which is a father and mother will do anything to protect their child from harm, even if it means putting themselves in danger. The parents and friend do not understand Alton’s unique powers but still stands by him. It was humorous to see that everyone in the pursuit does not want to leave a trail for anyone else to find which makes it interesting. The films show how ordinary everyday people deals with the extraordinary events that might be thrown their way. I gave this movie an eight because there were a few questions that were left unanswered along with a few plots. The conclusion of the film was nothing but heartbreaking and jaw-dropping. There were not many lines for a few main characters, but it did not take away from the movie being something that will entertain almost all sci-fi fans. The special effects, sounds, characters and cinematography were excellent.
