This in-depth review of Mischief Night (2013) explores its story, characters, and scares in detail, offering insights for every horror fan.
Mischief Night (2013) is a thriller horror movie that I neither love nor hate. It is also a movie that I would not see again because it appears to be cliche, You’re Next and The Strangers. Director Richard Schenkman (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, The Man From Earth, October 22) did an okay job executing this movie, but he had the potential to make it a hit. I am hoping that Mischief Night II is not a cliche and delivers a great sitting on the edge of your seat movie experience for me. I am not looking forward to part two, but I will see it, so check back in October 2014 to review it.
The movie is about Emily Watson (Noell Coet - Revelation Road 2: The Sea of Glass and Fire, Inside Out, Cowgirls n’ Angels), who is a young girl that has psychosomatic blindness after being in a car accident 9 years ago that took her mother’s life. Emily blames herself for her mother’s death and sees a psychiatrist regularly. His father, David (Daniel Hugh Kelly - Devil May Call, God’s Country), took care of her and thought a change in the neighborhood might benefit them. They moved to a huge house in a quiet secluded neighborhood.
David decides to start dating again because he has not dated since his wife died several years ago. He left Emily home alone and went on his date. Emily was looking forward to a quiet relaxing evening home but received the opposite. She is being terrorized by, The Intruder/hooded killer (Adam C. Edwards - Flight, Miami Vice, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1) wearing a yellow rain jacket. Emily scrambles to survive because she’s not familiar with her new house and surroundings.
I gave this movie a five because the storyline was okay, but I could not connect to any of the characters. The special effects were good, and the fighting scenes were intense. There were plot holes as well, and questions were left unanswered. Why did the intruder choose Emily to attack? Where did he come from? She is new to the area, so how does he know she will be home alone? The intruder was asked why he is doing this, and his answer was, “It’s Mischief Night.”
Mischief Night, in general, is a celebration on the East Coast of the United States on October 30th and in some parts of the U.K. and Europe. Mischief Night usually consists of young kids playing non-violent pranks on each other, throwing eggs at houses, putting paper on trees/wrapping trees with toilet paper, ring people’s doorbells and ran away, and other non-violent things. So this character in Mischief Night took it to a whole new level where it includes harming people, including other things.
